What metallic epoxy is and how the effect is created
Metallic epoxy is a decorative resinous floor built from reflective mica pigments dispersed through a clear, self-levelling 100% solids epoxy. The pigments are not simply a colour — they are fine metallic flakes that catch and scatter light at different angles, which is what produces the sense of depth rather than a flat printed pattern.
The pattern itself forms during the pour. As the resin levels and releases air, the pigments migrate, separate and pool. The installer directs that movement with squeegees, rollers, air blowers and controlled solvent application, encouraging the resin to form veins, ripples and cloud-like variation. Because those forces are fluid and time-dependent, the outcome is inherently unrepeatable.
Once the metallic layer has cured, one or two clear topcoats seal it. The topcoat determines gloss level, scratch resistance and UV stability — and it is the layer that wears, which means the decorative work underneath is protected and renewable.
Where metallic epoxy works best
This system earns its cost in spaces where the floor is part of the presentation. Reflectivity, depth and the fact that no competitor has an identical floor are the reasons clients specify it.
Showrooms and dealerships

Retail and hospitality
Boutiques, salons, cafés and lounges use metallic floors as a design element that also happens to be seamless and easy to sanitize. Works particularly well in smaller footprints where a full pour is affordable.
Residential interiors
Finished basements, home bars, entryways and feature rooms. Homeowners choose it for the appearance; the seamless, waterproof, allergen-free surface is the practical bonus.
Feature garages
Collector and display garages where the vehicles are the point. Durable enough for the traffic, but it will show scuffs and dust more than a flake floor — a trade-off worth making only if appearance is the priority.
Design, colour and the sample process
Colour selection drives everything. A single pigment over a matching base yields a restrained, stone-like floor that reads almost like polished marble. Two or three contrasting pigments produce dramatic veining. Darker bases with a metallic highlight give depth; lighter palettes brighten a room significantly.
Because photographs of metallic floors are unreliable — lighting and camera processing change them completely — we pour a physical sample board in your selected colours and bring it to your space. You see the palette under your own lighting, at your own viewing angle, before anything is committed.
What we cannot do is guarantee a specific pattern. If your design requires a predictable, repeatable surface, metallic is the wrong system and a solid colour epoxy or polished concrete is a better fit. We would rather redirect you at the sample stage than deliver a floor that does not match an expectation we could never have met.
Limitations you should understand before choosing metallic
We are deliberate about this section because metallic epoxy is the most oversold product in our industry. The resin is durable; the appearance is demanding. On a high-gloss, high-contrast reflective surface, fine scratches, scuff marks, dust and footprints are all more visible than they would be on a flake or matte finish. Facilities that cannot commit to frequent dust-mopping are usually happier with something else.
Pattern is not controllable to a specification. Standard epoxy ambers under sustained direct UV, so large south-facing glazing requires an aliphatic polyaspartic topcoat, and exterior use is not recommended at all. High-gloss surfaces are also slippery when wet, so entryways, wet rooms and commercial kitchens need either a broadcast additive — which mutes the mirror effect — or a different system entirely.
Cost sits at the top of our decorative range because the pour is labour-intensive and cannot be phased. And like every rigid resin, an actively moving crack will eventually telegraph through, so crack treatment happens during preparation rather than being masked by the finish.

Installation, preparation and timeline
Preparation for metallic is unforgiving because the finished surface is reflective — any waviness, patch line or high spot in the substrate becomes visible in the reflection. We diamond-grind the slab, remove all previous coatings and contamination, chase and fill cracks with polyurea, rebuild spalls, and level low spots before priming.
Moisture testing is mandatory. A self-levelling resin over a slab with high vapour drive will blister, and on a reflective floor a blister is impossible to disguise. Where readings are high we install a moisture-mitigating primer, which adds a day to the schedule and cost to the quote — but it is not optional.
The pour itself is a single, continuous operation across the full area, so we need uninterrupted access with stable temperature and no foot traffic. A typical residential-scale project runs four to five days including preparation, pour and topcoats. Light foot traffic usually returns 24 hours after the final coat, with full chemical cure at around seven days.
Maintaining the finish over the long term
The single most important habit is keeping grit off the floor. Abrasive dust dragged underfoot is what dulls a gloss surface, so entry matting at every door does more for longevity than any product you can buy. Dust-mop frequently; on a reflective floor, fine dust is visible within a day.
Damp-mop with a neutral-pH cleaner and a microfibre pad. Avoid vinegar, citrus-based cleaners and alkaline degreasers — none damage the epoxy immediately, but repeated use progressively dulls the clear coat. Felt pads under furniture and care with rolling toolboxes or display fixtures prevent most visible scratching.
When the topcoat does lose its gloss, restoration is straightforward: abrade the clear coat and apply a fresh one. The metallic layer is untouched, the original appearance returns, and the cost is a fraction of a new installation.
